The Spring Creek Motocross facility hosted rd 6 of the OMA Nationals series August twenty fifth and twenty sixth. Neighboring communities saw flash flooding during the previous week, so the track was a bit rough during the week. Fortunately for our racing enthusiasts, John Martin and Bill Gusse are

seasoned pros at making a difficult situation in to a great event. The track conditions at the Millville, Minnesota facility were near perfect for the weekend schedule of events. John Martin and his track maintenance crew along with Bill and Monte Gusse should be commended for their fantastic job of making the Rekluse Spring Creek GP another great experience for the loyal OMA Nationals racers.

The ATV racers lined up for their event ahead of the National Motocross starting line after a practice lap of the course. Matt Lindle (Honda / Fore / Maxxis)

rocketed to the front of the pack to take his first OMA Nationals holeshot. The youngster pressed his Quad City Quad Doctor Honda 450R through the motocross track and led the others in to the woods. “It was just awesome to get the holeshot and get out there and lead for a few laps”, said Lindle. The DL Machine, Arnold’s Motor Supply backed rider was running what he described as “by far my best race.” Lindle was running with the big dogs and holding his own until the third lap when “something started feeling a little funny in the back.” He said “I don’t know if I blew it, but something is messed up with my rear shock. It kept bottoming out on me everywhere.” Lindle continued to push hard, but he lost the final podium position to Rob Weis in the last two laps of the race. “We got down there to the last two laps and somebody got around me there, took third away, but we had a good race.” The Mom and Dad sponsored racer finished just twenty seven seconds behind Weis to capture fourth place.

Jason Gudde (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) also had an amazing start aboard his Rekluse equipped Honda 450R. “I got second place off that holeshot and I went through that whoop section, I think, faster than I ever have. Good god I was trying to catch him. I don’t think I’ve ever pounded through that thing that fast”, said the elated racer. “I really enjoyed the track. It’s the first time I’ve finished in the last two years.” The nine race laps took their toll on Gudde’s endurance. He was also running a strong pace aboard the ARS Suspension equipped Honda, but “just got wore out finally”. He would have to settle for sixth place.

Race winner Andy Lagzdins (Honda / Moose Racing / ITP) was running with the lead pack aboard the Atvriders.com Honda 450R and feeling out the track on his first ever trip to Millville. “There was a lot of different terrain and different lines on the first lap. We mixed it up there for a few laps”, recalled the Dirtfirstracing.com / Duncan Racing rider. “The motocross track was really neat, just riding on that. I’ve seen it so much in the motocross coverage in the Pro National stuff. It was pretty cool

just riding on that and hitting those two notorious whoop sections back there. That was fun. They were a little muddy today, but I was still pounding through them, so that was real fun. The woods were pretty dry, considering the floods they have had in this area. There was very little standing water and very little mud so it was just a good clean race. You could really get on it. No dust problems, no real bad mud problems, so you could just stay on it the whole time. It was a really good race. It was actually fun dicing with Matt and Rob. It makes things go so much quicker when you’re dicing with other people and swapping places and all. It was definitely fun and challenging.” Lagzdins finally broke away to finish his ninth lap five minutes ahead of second place Pro Rob Zimmerman.

Three time OMA Nationals ATV champion Rob Zimmerman (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) had a bad day at Millville. According to him, “the race went normal, as this year goes.” Another dismal start had the Ohio pro playing catch up again. His race was “bad start, flat tire, and flat tire.” He finished in second place at a race that proved to be a struggle with tires. Zimmerman battled his way to the lead pack, but pitted early in the race. “The quad was feeling weird and I pitted

because I could smell antifreeze. My tire was flat, so we changed that also”, said Zimmerman regarding his first stop. Shortly after changing the flat rear tire a missed turn lead to a rock that did some damage to a front tire. Zimmerman noticed the tire going flat while on the motocross track headed back out to the woods. He yelled to Matt Lindle’s father to let his pit crew know about the flat right front tire, so they had a tire set up and ready when he made it back to the pit area. After replacing flat tire number two Zimmerman took his GT Thunder / Big Gun Exhaust Honda back to do battle and managed to catch everyone but Lagzdins. Lap nine for the second place rider ended at two hours, two minutes, and forty four seconds.

The last spot on the Moose Racing sweep of the Rekluse podium went to Rob Weis (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) aboard a 2006 Honda 450R sponsored by Country Sports Racing and Casperson’s Tree Service. Weis had a pretty uneventful race except for the start. “I was probably dead last off the start so I got plastered in mud right away in the whoop section”, said Weis. “I think I battled with three or four different people out there. It made it a really fun race.” Weis finished his day twenty seven seconds ahead of Matt Lindle to grab third place.

Fifth place in the Pro ATV class went to a racer who was definitely out of

his element on the motocross section of the Spring Creek facility. Dillon Abernathy (Honda / Moose Racing / Maxxis) adapted to the situation aboard his Johnson’s ATV Racing, Mom and Dad sponsored Honda TRX450R. The polite and friendly young man said “The track was awesome, I just had to adapt to it. I’m really not used to jumping, so it was it was kind of a learning experience for me. It had a really good flow out there to it. Everything was tacking good. The rocks were awesome, so it was a lot of fun.” Abernathy finished his ninth lap after two hours, four minutes, and fifty seconds.

Curt DeMay (Kawasaki / Moose Racing / Maxxis) captured seventh place in the Pro class with eight laps completed in one hour, fifty eight minutes and twenty eight seconds. The Gieson Motorsports backed Kawasaki KFX450 rider had some glove problems and developed a blister problem early in the race. “I had a new pair of gloves and they gave me a blister, so I had to stop the second lap and get new ones. Towards the end the blister was hurting me and I just wanted to finish, so I slowed down. That’s all that mattered to me. I had fun.” DeMay would like to extend a special Thank You to Roxanne from Moose Racing for her assistance.

Justin Sullivan (Honda / Maxxis) won the B class aboard a Park Station Honda, Louisville backed Honda 450R. Sullivan said his EVS suspension worked well, but “the third lap I blew my rear shock and I rode the whole race without a rear shock.”

Racing newcomer Jason McCoy won the Utility class aboard a brand new Kawasaki Prairie. His Harrington’s Greenhouse sponsored ride sounded like a little trophy truck running through the course. McCoy said “we just got her last week and decided to race her. It was a fun day today. It was awesome. I can barely walk now after the race.”

I also spoke with two racing buddies who had a good time in the thirty plus class. Aaron Venters (Polaris / Moose Racing / ITP) finished twelfth aboard the number twenty nine Polaris Predator. Venters said “Larry (Falls) and I were going back and forth for a couple laps. We were having fun. He was clearing the big hill jump, which I wasn’t. I think he passed me there once. The course was rough, but it was fun.” Falls did better in the class and managed a seventh place finish in Plus thirty ATV and twenty second place overall with seven laps completed in two hours, six minutes, and twenty nine seconds.

A great group of ATV racers ignored the weather man and experienced a ride on one of the best race tracks in the country.

The combination of John Martin manicuring his awesome motocross track and Bill Gusse creating a tight and testing woods course made for another great day at the OMA Nationals. The points battle is very close in the PRO ATV class, and the racing is very exciting. If you race ATV’s or enjoy watching them you should get yourself out to the OMA Nationals series races. This is off road racing.
