Let's just say a "kid" did this... haha

Whibley treats himself to another Moose Run win

Like the Halloween holiday, the Moose Run is all about tricks and treats. The main trick, of course, is to remember that it’s a very long, relentless race where just getting to the finish line is never a given. The big treat is getting to that finish line because if you do, chances are you’ll do pretty good.

This year’s Moose Run--presented by Moose Racing and serving as the 10th and final round of the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals--saw FMF/AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley roll to his ninth straight OMA victory. He’d clinched his record-tying fourth consecutive series championship (a mark he now shares with Jimmy Jarrett of the American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road team) at round eight so he could’ve been excused for just going through the motions, but when Whibley lines up for a race, he’s there to win.

And he did just that, of course. With promoter Bill Gusse laying out his normal long loop (this one 38.3 miles around the Fenton, Illinois, area according to multi-time winner Jeff Fredette’s odometer) spiked with wonderful diversity, Whibley learned long ago that the first loop is just for getting acquainted and seeing where the trail goes. That leads to a very tight pack, with the front-runners acting almost like they’re on a Sunday trail ride.

The real racing takes place on the second lap after they’ve gotten their bearings.

At that point, the trail is burned in and the pace intensifies. Jarrett clung close to Whibley for a while, but he eventually found it impossible to stay with his former neighbor and riding partner, finishing less than two minutes behind after some three and a quarter hours of racing. The reason Whibley wins is because he’s both smart and fast: “You never know. It’s one of those races where a minute and a half can disappear pretty fast so you’ve always got to be on your toes.”

One of the best battles to watch was between local favorite Adam Bonneur and Jarrett’s teammate, Scott Watkins. Having grown up racing in the area, K Motosports Kawasaki’s Bonneur blitzed the ultra-fast, rough open corn field sections like he was racing in Baja. In fact, he started the race by trailing Whibley into the first bend, but he kept it pinned and rode around the outside of Whibley in that high-speed sweeper (situated in a corn field that had just been harvested on Friday) to earn his first $200 FMF Holeshot Award.

After that dose of glory, he found himself in a see-saw tussle over third place with Watkins, who seemed to gain most of his ground in the more technical woods sections.

But it remained a question mark until Bonneur crashed in the final miles, leaving him with no front brake and little hope of catching back up to the fleeing Honda. Still, fourth was Bonneur’s best finish of the season, which he joined late.

Brett Zofchak spent all day recovering from a crash in the early miles, but the Stiller Motorsports KTM racer never gave up and came back to claim a strong fifth place. Suzuki privateer Shane Klimek was another local who put his knowledge of the conditions to good use, actually leading for a few brief minutes in the early going and running with the lead pack before ultimately earning sixth place.

Open A winner Tyson Emery put his new-this-week YZ450F into seventh overall followed by 40-49 A winner Matt Stavish and Open A competitors Cody Emery and Trent Buck.

Whibley now has one more race weekend in the U.S. before taking his annual Christmas/New Year’s holiday back home in New Zealand. When he returns next year, he’ll be gunning to break the tie with Jarrett and make it five in a row.

70cc ATV Podium

Paul Whibley topped the podium for the ninth time in 10 rounds with his Moose Run triumph, this one over fellow four-time series champ Jimmy Jarrett and Jarrett's teammate Scott Watkins.

100cc ATV Podium

Paul Whibley (1) leads the field into the first turn, but Adam Bonneur (7) would end up swooping past the champ on the outside to take the $200 FMF Holeshot Award. Ultimately, Whibley would win the race to cap off his fourth consecutive championship season with Bonneur fourth on the day.

Riley Brueggeman - ATV Overall

Whibley drops into Rock Creek on the first of two 38.3-miles laps after securing the lead he'd hold for the rest of the day.

Wyatt Kyarsgaard - Pro ATV

After keeping a close watch on Whibley, Jarrett would end up less than two minutes behind to secure second place. That matched his season-best finish from round two in what's been a frustrating season marked by injury and, mostly, bad luck. It was also his final year of full-time competition as he envisions a shift into a more managerial role for the GEICO Powersports team.

Scott Watkins fought all day with Adam Bonneur for third, locking the final podium spot up when local favorite Bonneur crashed in the final miles.

Whibley and Jarrett, a pair of four-time OMA champs.

Endurance. Strength. Mind Games. It’s time for the Moose Run!

Is your Machine READY? Are YOU Ready for a 30+ mile loop?! Don’t forget your pit crew! You will need them!

It has been many years since this fall Moose Run “Formerly” called “The Race” has been created into a 40+ mile loop (Sunday Only). Races of this kind are nearly extinct, I can remember as a kid jumping in the van and head to the several gas stops to wait anxiously for the excitement of the sound of the bikes coming across the field… who would be in the lead? Where was dad? We hope he’s ahead of his racing nemesis’… mainly Jeff Fredette or Ron Ribolzi back then, names forever burned into my memory. Many of your gas stops where along the side of the road after a big open field. You could hear them in the woods for minutes before they come charging out into the open field. Ahhhh…. The memories of racing as a kid! And THAT is exactly what the Moose Run keeps alive in this day… Old Fashioned racing! No round and round and round the same ol’ loop, no limited trails… wide open across the neighbor’s fields, pastures, ravines, and timbers. A variety of terrain to travel across from smooth rhythm like… to testing your skills in the wood sections. Just you, your dirtbike, nature and your nemeses! A race where your bike and you become a team that must handle the distance, along with your mind. The Moose Run is a race that can NOT be won in the first loop, but a race that is anyone’s race at anytime. This has been proven many times over the years… from being won down to the last turn to the finish line in past years. We have seen Jimmy Jarrett literally stalk the leaders and take them out right at the finish line! We have seen men like Jeff Fredette and John Martin, KILL the field. So keep this in mind when you are out there and the thought of quitting crosses your mind. It’s not over until you see the checkers waving!

The ATV Championship has been locked in by former OMA Champion John Pitts, congratulations John on your second consecutive championship.

A race-long duel with Phil Wall ended up in Bryan Hulsey's favor with the former series champ finishing second for the fourth time this season.

Phillip Wall

One mistake cost Phil Wall second so he had to settle for third.

Craig Fallis

A rear shock that couldn't keep up and a lack of motivation resulted in a so-so ride for A winner Craig Fallis, who nonetheless finished fourth overall.

Josh Trafelet
Josh turned his quad into a three wheeler

From left: third-place Phil Wall, winner John Pitts and runner-up Bryan Hulsey.

The Pro podium consisted of (from left) third-place Scott Watkins, winner Paul Whibley and runner-up Jordan Ashburn. If it looks familiar, it's because they've finished this way three times in a row now.

Paul Whibley

Though still feeling the effects of his brutal crash at the GNCC the week before, Paul Whibley decided to ride--something he did well again, winning for the eight round in a row.

Jordan Ashburn
After starting off with the $200 FMF Holeshot Award, Jordan Ashburn spent the first five (of nine) laps in front until his bike started running badly with a clogged air filter. He settled for second, though he's got second in points locked up already.

Scott Watkins
Though plagued with another bad start, Scott Watkins marched steadily through the pack until he was third just past the halfway point. From there, he had his hands full staving off Russell Bobbitt, though he did so successfully.

Russell Bobbitt

Russell Bobbitt was the last man to beat Paul Whibley, having accomplished that feat at the opening round many months ago. He showed up in Indiana with a fourth AMA National Enduro Championship on his resume, got a great start and ran with the leaders all day, eventually finishing about six seconds behind Watkins for fourth place.

Adam Bonneur

Adam Bonneur got a good start, though he'd end up a solitary fifth

Round 9: Smith Goggles High Line Cross-country National

Eight in a row for Whibley with painful Indiana win

By Mark Kariya

Paul Whibley could easily have passed up riding the Smith Goggles High Line Cross-country National, round nine of the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals, at the Reynolds Family Farm in Medora, Indiana. He’d wrapped up the championship at the previous round with his seventh win in a row, so riding the final two rounds could’ve been considered optional.

And no one would’ve blamed him for skipping it after witnessing his horrendous crash into a tree at the GNCC the week before when he slammed into a tree while dicing with FMF/AmPro Yamaha teammate Thad Duvall for the final podium spot.

But the Kiwi--now a four-time series champ after locking in the 2011 title at round eight--ended up going to Medora, testing how his leg felt after Saturday practice (still extremely painful) and lined up on Sunday. Amazingly, he started quickly, though he drifted wide, almost tangling with four-time AMA National Enduro Champ Russell Bobbitt (the last man to beat him at an OMA this year when the FMF/KTM Factory Off-road Racing Team star took the opening round) and drifting wide.

That allowed Obermeyer Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn to cut inside and edge Bobbitt for the $200 FMF Holeshot Award. Ashburn proceeded to lead the first five laps--his best performance to date--until the air filter started clogging, leading, predictably, to less power out of his YZ250.

After treading gingerly to both test and protect his tender leg, Whibley went to the front in the final hour and hammered away in his usual manner to take win number eight.

“I was careful not to fall off, I was careful to avoid any trees whacking [my thigh] or even stones, like roost and stuff,” he said. “I was conscious of that and wouldn’t say I warmed up during the first part but [was] just being careful, I guess. We’re still in a points battle for the GNCCs. I’ve got this sewn up so it really didn’t matter what I did today, but it ended up working out.”

Ashburn hung on for second with American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road CRF450R-mounted Scott Watkins coming back through the pack after a bad start to mix it up with the leaders, ultimately fighting off Bobbitt for third. Bobbitt was fourth, just six seconds back in his first ride aboard his 2012 300 XC.

A top B racer a couple years ago, Morgan Moss entered the Pro division in Medora--his first OMA of the year--and earned fifth aboard his YZ450F. Adam Bonneur started quickly on his K Motosports KX450F, but a case of arm pump and, later, falling would relegate him to a lonely sixth. Shane Klimek took his trusty self-sponsored RM250 to seventh, which helped him leapfrog past Jimmy Jarrett into fourth in the points. Jarrett’s bad luck continued, this time with a stomach problem after a couple laps forced the American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road ace back to the pits after running second despite a last-place start.

Lite A racers Jake Fiddler, Kyleer Vance and Derek Spangler rounded out the top 10 overall.

The final race of the 2011 OMA Nationals will be the Moose Run in two weeks. However, the 2011-2012 Parts Unlimited OMA Winter Series--the High Line serving as round two of that seven-round series--will continue through the winter with round three coming up in Cobb, Kentucky, on November 12-13.

Round 8: Rekluse Moonshine Cross-country Nationals

Seventh straight win earns Whibley his fourth straight championship

By Mark Kariya

Paul Whibley doesn’t like to take chances. So, rather than wait until all 10 rounds of the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals play out, he set a goal of winning as many rounds as he could and, hopefully, wrapping it up early.

The three-time and defending series champ met that goal when he won round eight--the Rekluse Moonshine Cross-country National outside of Erie, Illinois--to make it seven straight victories.

“We’ll have to go home and look at the points and do some math, scratch our heads a little bit and see how it comes out,” the FMF/AmPro Yamaha star mused after his latest triumph.

But it wasn’t as easy as it might appear. Though Whibley started out with another $200 FMF Holeshot Award, he’d soon have to stop a couple times--first to remove a stick that was making his rear brake drag and then to get fresh goggles after sitting behind guys and getting roosted.

“When you’re behind guys, the roost is pretty bad,” he noted. “I caught back up and tried to make passes and just destroyed [my] goggles.”

But shortly after the halfway mark, he reclaimed the lead and held it to the end. Behind him, former leader Scott Watkins of the American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road team continued to battle Obermeyer Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn. On the last lap, Ashburn made the final pass and sealed up second place, which also wrapped up second in the championship.

Whibley’s latest win gives him 235 points with Ashburn 51 back at 184 and Watkins third at 130.

Watkins’ teammate Rory Mead made his second OMA appearance and even though he wasn’t satisfied with his riding, he was pleased with the result: fourth. K’s Motorsport’s Adam Bonneur likewise felt off yet he finished a respectable fifth over Shane Klimek.

Wyatt Setterburg won Open A for the second round in a row, putting him seventh overall, followed by Open A runner-up Austin Wells, Lite A winner Daniel Janus and Lite A runner-up Brandon Farnum.

Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals, Round 6:

FMF Spring Creek Grand Prix

Brutal heat and humidity don’t faze Whibley in Millville win

By Mark Kariya

Temperatures in the 90s combined with matching humidity increased the difficulty factor several times at the FMF Spring Creek Grand Prix, round six of the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals, co-sanctioned with the MXC Series. As expected, though, it was just another day at the office for FMF/Am Pro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley who coupled his superior conditioning with carefully honed speed to lead all day, eventually coming away with his fifth consecutive series victory and stretching his points lead further in his quest for a record-tying fourth straight championship.

He started out by speeding away with the $200 FMF Holeshot Award. Beta’s Chris Bach put himself into a close second for a few laps but would drop back, losing a lot of time when he stopped to strip his undershirt off to provide a bit better cooling.

That allowed Obermeyer/FMF Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn to sneak by and the teenager from Tennessee held the runner-up spot for the rest of the way, though Bach put on a charge in the final mile or so, ending up two seconds behind the Yamaha.

American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road’s Jimmy Jarrett returned to the series for the first time since breaking his collarbone at round four, and he demonstrated good speed, running a close third for a lap or so. Eventually, he’d settle into fourth, a minute ahead of teammate Scott Watkins.

Adam Bonneur, Michael Williams, Lite A winner Nate Ferderer and Open A winner Dylan Debel rounded out the top 10 overall.

1 (Whibley)

High heat and humidity didn’t seem to bother Paul Whibley in the least, as he controlled the race from beginning to end at Millville, notching his fifth straight series win.

2 (Ashburn)

Jordan Ashburn rebounded from a so-so start to move into second, though it took a lot out of him and he barely held off a last-lap challenge from Chris Bach.

3 (Bach)

It was so hot and humid that Chris Bach actually stopped to take off his undershirt before charging to third, just two seconds behind Ashburn.

4 (Jarrett)

In his first race back from breaking a collarbone at round four in Ohio, Jimmy Jarrett showed he’d lost no speed, running a close third in the early going, eventually finishing fourth.

5 (Watkins)

It was a fairly lonely afternoon for Scott Watkins who rode to a solitary fifth, putting him third in series points.

6 (Pro podium)

Pro podium (L-R): runner-up Jordan Ashburn, winner Paul Whibley and third-place Chris Bach.

------------------------------------------- ATV'S -------------------------------------------

Pro podium (from left): runner-up Bryan Hulsey, winner John Pitts and third-place Clint Voss.

Despite smashing a finger at work a few days before, John Pitts put the pain aside and led the whole way for his third consecutive series win and fourth out of the six rounds to date.

Bryan Hulsey had a somewhat slow start but rallied back to a strong second place.

Clint Voss, the current MXC Series points leader, held third Pro pretty much all afternoon. His third place finish will launch him further in the points for the MXC Series.

Despite being very tired in the waning laps due to slacking off on training, Craig Falis enjoyed his best result to date, winning the A class and finishing an excellent third overall.

This is a great opportunity for talented, committed amateur’s to obtain direct support from the industry who have invested not only a large amount of monetary value into our sport but who have also invested training for their passion. Let’s face it, today our racers are diminishing due to economic concerns and trials, those left standing have a passion too deep for our sport and refuse to allow the “destroyers” of this great country take away their passion! And We at OMA wanted to give back to the top three amateur racers who “Give it their all on and off the track” with the OMA ROAR Award. OMA will be promoting the OMA ROAR Award at events and online, along with promoting the sponsors / supporters supporting the award.

To be eligible for this award a racer must be:

1) An amateur (never competed at national pro class level)
2) Compete in a minimum of 7 events out of 10

We (OMA family) will be voting on the OMA ROAR Award recipient and the 2 runner ups and announce them at the OMA banquet. We will choose these three recipients out of a lineup of hundreds of racers, motorcycle, atv, and mini.

Four in a row for Whibley

By Mark Kariya

FMF / AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley led the Maxxis Wolverine Cross-country National, round five of the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals, from start to finish outside of Mesick, Michigan. It marked his fourth consecutive series triumph. American Beta’s Chris Bach ran a strong second, keeping Whibley on his toes all afternoon at the Twisted Trails Offroad Park while Obermeyer/AmPro Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn maintained his perfect record of podium finishes with his third-place ride.

Whibley made things easier on himself--and more difficult for the competition--by decisively snagging the $200 FMF Holeshot Award ahead of RM250-mounted privateer Shane Klimek, American Honda/GEICO Powersports/JG Off-road’s Scott Watkins and the rest of the field.

“It was a good way to start a day,” Whibley noted. He then proceeded to spend the next couple hours maintaining a narrow margin over Bach who never gave up despite riding the final lap and a half of the eight-mile course with no tip on the brake pedal. “We were pushing pretty hard because Chris was back there and he was pushing pretty hard as well.”

One thing that worked in Whibley’s favor, however, proved to be the extensive tight woods sections: “It’s quite tight trees [here] so even though it’s a maybe 10-second lead, it’s hard for him to make up because it’s so slow in a lot of that stuff.”

Bach, who’s concentrated on the GNCCs for the past few years after starting his career in the OMAs, said, “I knew what to expect, obviously, from practice yesterday, but at the same time, in practice I tried to do a lap slow to get used to the trails and I tried to sprint the second lap yesterday to see if my mind would process the tight trees.

“It wasn’t even the same [today during the race]. The first lap today we were going so much faster. I wouldn’t say I was out of control, but I was definitely out of my comfort zone.”

Whibley would end up nearly two minutes faster after completing six laps in two hours, 19 minutes and 32 seconds, with Bach’s time 2:21:28. Ashburn would complete the podium with his 2:24:12, though he did it the hard way after botching the start. “I charged real hard the first lap and went to passing people and got up as far as I could. I knew [the leaders] would be gone because I knew they got a good start and it’d be hard to catch them.” So, he spent most of the day a lonely third, though Watkins nearly caught him in the final miles, the Honda rider finishing less than two seconds behind in fourth.

Husaberg’s Nick Fahringer battled a case of arm pump that saw him go backwards in the pack for a while, though he shook that off eventually and clawed his way to fifth.

Michigan’s Aaron Wegner proved the fastest of the locals, taking his Gas Gas EC 250 to the Open A win and sixth overall. That put him a little over 10 minutes ahead of the next A rider, Lite A winner Derek Spangler, with Pro Adam Bonneur splitting them in the overall standings. A riders Ron Sharphorn and Daniel Janus rounded out the top 10.

WHIBLEY CHALLENGED BUT PREVAILS AGAIN! FMF AM PRO YAMAHA TAKES THE PODIUM SWEEP!

FMF Am Pro Yamaha's Paul Whibley may have been sweating a bit last weekend when fellow New Zealander, Yamaha mounted, Rory Mead and fellow Teammate Thad Duvall put some pressure on the OMA dominating presence. Whibley though, always the cool calculating racer, never gives up a good fight and knows, it's not over until that checker flag waves. And once again Whibley prevailed against competitors and a brutal terrain. We congratulate Paul Whibley on his 2nd consecutive win, determination, and talent.

Mad Thad returned, boy we have genuinely missed this kid, he is a skilled young racer with talents we believe he hasn't even began to tap into yet. He just keeps improving with each year and after coming off a recent injury he has picked up where he left off and that's on the podium.

New Obermeyer/Am-Pro Yamaha recruit Jordan Ashburn would lead the pack on the opening lap, Ashburn's racing abilities are maturing and he has improved tremendously this year and this make his third straight podium finish.

Scott Watkins 4th overall and Jimmy Jarrett CRF450R mounted for the same JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports team would struggle this event. Jarrett would suffer a hard crash and suffer a concussion.

Round 4 of the OMA Nationals Sees Pitts Back on Top of the Podium

Round four of the OMA Nationals leads us to Rio Grand Ohio on a nice clear day with great weather for an ATV Cross Country race. Coming into the 3 rd round, Duncan Racing/Dirtworks Mototsport’s Bryan Hulsey (2010 Series #2) had a slim 1 point lead over his Teammate the reining RK Chains/Hot Cams/Pivot Works OMA ATV Nationals Champion John Pitts. The outcome of this race would decide the current points leader going into the half way mark of this 2011 nine race OMA Nationals series.

As the Green Flag waved it was the Duncan Racing/Maxima Oils/Motion Pro Backed #2 of Bryan Hulsey grabbing the FMF $100 Holeshot award, followed by his teammate Bosch Tools/Vee Rubber Tires mounted John Pitts and new series regular #9 of Dirtworks Motorsports/O’Neal backed Dustin Reeves. In fourth was Can Am mounted Bryan Buchannon and the Yamaha of David Hawkin rounded out the top five. As the three front runners pulled slightly away from the rest of the field, it was clear that they were on a mission to claim the top spot of the podium by the end of the race. Near the end of the first lap Maier Mfg/Hiper Wheels/ODI Grips sponsored John Pitts found a straight line around Moose Racing/Precision/Exit Shocks backed Bryan Hulsey and finished the first lap in the lead with Hulsey and Reeves right on his heels. Lap two was pretty much of a follow the leader with no change in the top 3 running order except for a slightly larger gap between the 2 nd place UM Performance/K&N Filters/Rekluse Clutch backed Hulsey and HMF/Pro Armor sponsored Reeves.

Lap three saw a shake up in the distances between the riders when SMX Goggles’s Reeves was trying to close the gap and carried too much speed on a downhill, slid off the track and came off of his HMF Sponsored ride. The crash by Reeves handed the third spot to the Can Am of Bryan Bucannon which he held on to for the finish when Reeves got going again only to break his drive chain soon after the crash and ending his day. This gave the lead duo of Pitts and Hulsey room to battle without consequence. Near the half way point of the third lap Cometic Gaskets/Smith Optics’s John Pitts was given some breathing room of his own with a costly mistake by the #2 bike of Quad Tech/Easton Handlebars Bryan Hulsey stalled his bike over an uphill log jump and lost about 40 valuable seconds. This gap would slightly grow by a couple of seconds over the remaining laps as Powermadd/Kal Guard sponsored John Pitts claimed his 2 nd win of the 2011 season. After the race Duncan Racing/Pivot Works’s  Bryan Hulsey stated “when I lost sight of John on the hill on the third lap, I was pushing as hard as I could and made about 3-4 little mistakes every lap. I probably should have just tried to calm down and go mistake free to make up the time and I might have made up more time on him without all of the little bobbles and running off the track here and there. John rode a smart race today and I just took myself out of it when I stalled it and couldn’t make up any time. There is always next race to get him back!”

The win for the day handed the points lead back to reigning champion Pitts. He was quite happy to have survived the battle without incident. “I knew I lost Bryan on the uphill log jump and I figured the he must have stalled it or something, so I just tried to put in some super clean laps and not make any mistakes to give up any time to him. It must have worked because he never caught me” Stated an elated Fluidyne/EBC Brakes backed Pitts.

Pitts now has a four point advantage heading into the fifth round and these two series front runners have separated themselves from the rest of the field with a comfortable lead, and now it seems to be a battle amongst the teammates for the 2011 championship.

One final note:

We at OMA were very impressed with our new graphics sponsor, Spider Graphix! We highly advise racers to work with this company, they are complete enthusiasts and go over and beyond to make things happen! Their work is extremely impressive and professional. So many graphics companies give the run around and/or simply do not get the job done in time, not so with Spider Graphix. We stand behind Spider Graphix and their commitment to our sport!

Bobbitt Slams the 250 XC KTM Smack Dab on the Top Box!

FMF/KTM Factory rider Russell Bobbitt would reign today at the opening round of the Parts Unlimited OMA Nationals kicked off at Seven Springs Lodge in Tuscumbia, Alabama, on the two-stroke, which was ideal for the rocky, hilly, tight terrain. Vet B rider, Timmy Konig put it in words best as he came through scoring, “There’s a ROCK Out There!” Bobbitt would take the $200 FMF Holeshot and never look back, leading the entire event.

Well….. 2010 OMA Champion FMF/AmPro Yamaha’s Paul Whibley had a “race”, for the past two years Whibley has been on cruise control dominating the OMA Series. We have all come to watch Whibley cruise with little tension and relaxed body posture over the past few years, however this day; there was much tension and aggression in the Whibley posture. Whibley pushed hard every lap, with Bobbitt always in his sight, even the spectators believed he would get around Bobbitt the next lap, the next lap, the final lap, but come up short in the seven laps. Whibley would explain “I was kind of looking for places to pass, but it was kind of hard to find them out here today, As the race wore on and on, I was like, ‘I’ve got to find somewhere and, like, really make it happen! I was working hard trying to make some passes on that last lap and I ended up losing some time, but that’s the way it goes. It was a good race; we were pushing each other hard.” Check out Whibley’s Race Report at http://www.allianceoffroad.com/TeamAlliance/RaceReports.aspx

It was just a few weeks ago Bobbitt would find himself passed two turns from the checkers at the previous OMA Winter Nationals and defeated by R2W Racing’s Shane O’Banion. “A lot of people asked me, what happened? It gets under my skin. But I just really wanted to win today, we’ve been working for it and we’ve done a lot of good preparation, I think.” Check out Bobbitt’s Race Report at http://www.rbobbitt.com

Though Bobbitt will miss a couple rounds, he intends to ride most of the series for the first time, and if he and his 250 XC continue to perform at this level, Whibley has yet another challenger for the crown he’s had locked in for three consecutive seasons as he chases what would be four in a row, putting him into a tie with 4X OMA Champion Jimmy Jarrett. Check out JG Off-road Race Report at http://www.jgoffroad.com/JG_Offroad/Welcome.html

New Obermeyer/Am-Pro Yamaha recruit Jordan Ashburn spent most of the afternoon in a rather solitary third place after recovering from a mediocre start. He would end up nearly six minutes behind Whibley and 16 seconds ahead of Jarrett, who was, in turn, making his OMA debut aboard a new bike, his a CRF450R for the same JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports squad.

Husaberg’s Nick Fahringer also came on strong at the end to earn fifth on his FX 450 while Jarrett’s JG Off-road/Geico Honda teammate Scott Watkins settled for sixth after spending a few laps in fourth. Kenneth Gilbert on a R2W Racing Husaberg, Shane Klimek on his trusty RM250, Brett Zofchak aboard his 250 XC and Michael Williams on his KX250F rounded out the top 10.

Team Epic’s Race Report…

On Saturday February 19 th a nice and sunny afternoon the First round of the 2011 OMA Nationals kicked off with Richie Brown grabbing the $100.00 FMF Holeshot award.  Richie led the first lap with the trio of Bryan Hulsey, John Pitts, and Chris Moore in hot pursuit and distancing themselves from the rest of the pack.  By the end of lap two Epic Racing’s John Pitts had moved his Duncan Racing’s/ Bosch Tools/Vee Rubber/ Moose Racing quad into the lead with his Epic Racing Teammate Bryan Hulsey on the identically backed Duncan Racing/Bosch Tools/Vee Rubber/Moose Racing quad in tow.  The two current were being chased heavily by Richie Brown.  Chris Moore had recovered from a brief early off track excursion and was still in the hunt for the lead by mid race.

The great equalizer in this OMA National first round was a rock garden section that seemed to provide a traffic jam every lap for the fierce four way battle for the lead.  This section provided lead changes and position swaps almost every lap.  On lap 5 the rock garden caught the lead trio of John Pitts, Bryan Hulsey, and Richie Brown off guard and Chris Moore snuck by for the lead.  The next rider to emerge was John Pitts on his EBC/ARSFX/RK Chain’s backed quad and just a little ways back was the duo of Richie Brown and EBC/ARSFX/RK Chains Bryan Hulsey.  Team Epic’s John Pitts got the Hot Cams/Hot Rods bike back into the lead and as the race was winding down Richie Brown began to suffer from a mechanical issue that slowed his charge and allowed Epic Racings Bryan Hulsey to move his Hot Cams/Hot Rods backed bike back in the third spot and set sights on catching the two leaders and to try to make it a 3 way battle for the lead again.

At the end of lap 7 with only about 30 seconds separating the 2 leaders from 3 rd place, EBC/ARSFX/RK Chain’s Bryan Hulsey’s luck would run out with an object slicing through the rear shock reservoir line and that would be the end of his day as he limped his quad to finish the current lap.  Luckily for Bryan only he and the two leaders made it out for the final lap of the race and he would end up 3 rd for the day without having to continue.  "I had a great race going.  We were never out of contention for the win because every lap, the rock section kept us on our toes and no matter what place you were in, if you were close you still had a shot at the win.  That is all I wanted to do today was stay close and keep my shot at the win alive.  That didn't happen because something caught my rear shock line and blew the rear shock, but I am still happy with the outcome", stated Hulsey.

His Epic Racing teammate John Pitts charged ahead and had secured the Overall win with a little, yet not too comfortable gap over Chris Moore which is how the finishing order would be for the end of the race.  Overall winner John Pitts said after the race, "I got off of the line dead last and started making passes to try to catch the leaders.  Then we hit the bottleneck on lap two and Bryan (Hulsey) and I got into the lead.  We were pushing each other pretty good and that same spot decided to be a threat every lap and we all kept swapping the lead.  In the end it worked out great and I am very happy with the results."

Needless to say without mechanical difficulties, this was going to be a four way battle to the finish, and two of these combatants are “EPIC” teammates.  It seems that there are no rules out on the race track when it comes to fighting for the lead and it was proved here once again at Round 1 of the OMA Nationals in Tuscumbia Alabama with a super race that kept the spectators on their feet the whole time waiting to see who would emerge in the lead at the end of every lap.

Mini’s

In the 0-110cc 12-13 class, Nick Swenson took the lead and checked out at the checkers for the Mini Overall win. Cody Barnes hammered down lap after lap, but would come up short in the end finishing 37 seconds behind Nick Swenson.

Kaleb Hagan put on a show for the scoring crew, pro’s and spectators, popping wheelies one after the next and would take the win in the 65cc 10-11 class. Langdon Feltner (S & S Powersports / Moose Racing / Spider Graphix / Pro Taper / Scott / JJ Performance / EVS / Matrix / Alpine Stars) battled the rocky terrain for 2 nd place in the 65cc 10-11 class.
